Review: The Dead Don’t Die

I initially was enamored with the idea of a zombie movie with Bill Murray and Danny Glover, so I was really excited to watch The Dead Don’t Die. Unfortunately, it got very bad reviews. I mean, it has 54% on Rotten Tomatoes and 5.5/10 on IMDB. When I’m searching for a film to watch on my various streaming services, I wouldn’t consider a movie to watch with a 5.5. IMDB rating. But I just couldn’t get over how funny Adam Driver sounds when he says “ghouls” in the trailer so two years after it came out and because I wanted to watch a zombie movie I watched it.

Focus Features

I thought it was great!

I should say that I don’t watch horror movies/shows ever. I know this is considered a horror movie, as all zombie movies are, but aside from the never watching horror movies because I don’t like to be scared, I will watch most zombie movies. I have watched many.

I didn’t even realize the film had Adam Driver as one of the main characters, who of course plays Kylo Ren, my favorite Star Wars character. I actually had to look him up, as embarrassing as that is, because I was all like “hmmm he looks really familiar” and I couldn’t place him.

I’ve actually done that before. I was watching Me Before You and I was like “hmmm she looks very familiar” and my dad was like um, that’s Daenerys Targaryen, and I was like wow. She is my favorite character in Game of Thrones.

So we have Adam Driver, Bill Murray, and ChloĆ« Sevigny; they are the cops. Then there’s Danny Glover, he’s the postal worker. And Tilda Swinton is the Scottish, samurai-wielding coroner?! I’m so dead.

And of course, no zombie movie set in some remote town would be complete without a gun-wielding, Trump-supporting, racist white guy. And so we have Steve Buscemi. Oh, and a wilderness guy, Tom Waits! Who actually shoots at Bill Murray and Bill Murray is all like okay it’s fine have a great day nice to see you too.

The only thing I was super annoyed by was how ChloĆ« Sevigny’s character – Officer Mindy Morrison – could not hold it together, like at all. I was relieved when she was eaten by zombies (that’s not really a spoiler).

My favorite part is when Officer Ronnie Peterson (Adam Driver) and Zelda Winston (Tilda Swinton) have a little Star Wars conversation over the officer’s key chain. It was really cute for Star Wars fans.

I can see how people hate this movie though. The ending is pretty fucking terrible. But if you just go into it wanting to have a little fun and not expecting much, it really is great.
